In support of the Continuing Professional Development and Remediation Committee, the Professional Development and Remediation Division (PDRD) ensures the application of the Regulation respecting mandatory continuing education for physicians and the Regulation respecting periods of refresher training and refresher courses that may be imposed on physicians.

The PDRD develops and organizes various types of professional development, refresher and remediation activities for physicians who hold a permit to practice or who have held a permit to practice and wish to return to practice in Quebec.

The activities focus on meeting five types of needs:

  • updating knowledge in specific fields of medical practice through targeted workshops
  • the acquisition of a new competency for a physician who is moving into another field of practice or wants to add a new one to his practice;
  • updating the competence of a physician who has ceased practicing for some time;
  • upgrading or correcting certain deficiencies in the competence of a practicing physician;
  • updating the competence of a physician who has already had a permit to practice in Quebec, who has practiced outside Canada or the United States in recent years and who wants to return to practice in Quebec.

Physicians may choose to complete these activities on their own initiative (new competencies and knowledge). In other cases, they may do so following a recommendation of or commitment to the Collège’s Professional Inspection Committee, Inquiries Division (Syndic) or Requests Committee. For this purpose, the Division creates and holds structured oral interviews as assessment tools for certain specialties.

The Division is responsible for establishing and monitoring continuing professional development activities in connection with the Regulation respecting mandatory continuing education for physicians. In addition, the Collège des médecins’ Administrative Follow-up Program is under the responsibility of a physician in the PDRD.

The nature and duration of refresher and remediation activities vary. There are four types of activities:

  1. Continuing education activities for specific fields
  2. Structured reading program
  3. Tutoring program
  4. Period of refresher training (voluntary or imposed by the Collège, with or without practice restrictions)

You can reach the staff of the Professional Development and Remediation Division from Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Friday, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
