To ensure professional oversight of its members, the Collège des médecins du Québec creates and keeps a file on each one of them. As well as sketch a portrait of the career paths taken by physicians practising in Québec, the professional file provides an account of the relations established between the Collège and its members. The documents contained in the professional file have to do with access to the profession, the physician’s competence and quality of practice. They bear witness to facts, as well as to means used by the Collège and results following its interventions. These are placed in the professional file for their value in administrative, legal, informative and historical terms. The professional file may contain summaries, correspondence, permits, certificates, notices, memos, reports, excerpts from minutes of meetings, forms, disciplinary or legal decisions, as well as photographs.
These documents come from divisions within the Collège, the physician himself or herself, faculties of medicine, hospital centres, courts of justice, other professional orders as well as government agencies or other bodies. They are grouped together in five categories, according to their provenance and subject matter: Admission, Practice Enhancement, Inquiries, Discipline/Review and General. The professional file attests to the Collège des médecins du Québec’s will to assume its responsibility to protect the public and oversee professional practice. A person who wishes to access the professional file of a physician must read the procedure Request for Access to a Document.
