Our history - 175 years of the Collège

In 2022, the Collège des médecins celebrated its 175th anniversary!

Throughout this very special year, we've been highlighting our rich history, which also reflects that of medical practice in Quebec.

Dr Mauril Gaudreault

A word from the President

Since our founding in 1847, society and science have evolved, and so has the Collège. Our mission, however, has not changed. Every day, we work to protect the public by providing quality medicine.

As the 34th president of one of Quebec's oldest professional orders, I am proud and honoured to share this history with you today!

- Dr. Mauril Gaudreault, President of the Collège des médecins du Québec

Commemorative book (1847-2022)

To celebrate its 175-year history, the College asked author and historian Denis Goulet to revisit his work “Histoire du Collège des médecins du Québec”, originally published during the 150th anniversary. Goulet added the most significant moments of the past 25 years to create a captivating book, released in June 2022 by Éditions du Septentrion.

About the Author:

Denis Goulet, Ph.D., specializes in the history of medicine, a field he taught during his academic career. He has published around twenty books and numerous scientific articles. Honored by the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine and the Royal Society of Canada, he has also been a guest professor at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris.

Goulet is notably the author of books such as “Brève histoire des épidémies au Québec”, “Histoire de la Faculté de médecine de l’Université Laval”, and “Histoire de la médecine au Québec 1800-2000”, co-authored with Robert Gagnon, all published by Éditions du Septentrion.
