Specialist’s certificate

Specialist’s Certificate in Family Medicine

Conditions

In view of the recognition of family medicine as a specialty, a general practitioner who is eligible for a permit to practice valid in Québec will receive a specialist’s certificate in family medicine issued by the Collège des médecins du Québec at the acceptance of his/her request for a permit to practice.

Specialist’s Certificate for a physician who already holds a “regular” permit to practice in Québec

Conditions

To be issued a specialist’s certificate in one of the 54 specialties recognized in Québec, including family medicine, the holder of a valid permit to practice in the province must have successfully passed

  • the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) exam;
    or
  • the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) exam for certification in the specialty in question.

Procedure

In order to have their application processed, the physician must

- certificate in family medicine issued by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or by the American Board of Family Medicine;
or
- specialist’s certificate issued by the Royal College.

  • issue a  cheque of $100 to the order of the Collège des médecins du Québec to cover the fee required for the issuance of the certificate;
  • forward the required documents and payment to the CMQ at the address provided below.

Furthermore, when a physician obtains a new specialist’s certificate in Québec, the Collège sends the information to the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and the specialty is entered on the membership roll of the Order.

Notes —The notion of “primary” specialty no longer exists in Québec. Therefore, any request in this regard (or related to the specialty used for billing) must be addressed to the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) or to the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ), as the case may require.

Original documents and certified true copies will not be returned to the candidate.
