Recognition of equivalence in order to obtain a regular permit to practice

The permit to practice is issued when a resident has completed in a satisfactory manner all of the required training periods in a recognized program for the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ), has successfully passed the final examination in family medicine or in one of the other specialties officially recognized in Québec, and has satisfied other required conditions.

STEPS TO FOLLOW
In order to obtain a permit to practice medicine in Québec, an International medical graduate who holds a medical degree (M.D. diploma) from a medical school or a university outside of Canada or the United States, will have to overcome the following steps:
Step 1 Obtain the recognition of the equivalence of your medical degree (M.D. Diploma)
Step 2 Obtain a residency position in an accredited program in one of the four faculties of medicine in Québec or in Canada (by the Royal College or CFPC) or in the United States (by the ACGME) and complete a postgraduate training
Step 3 Succeed to Final exam in one of the recognized specialties
Step 4 Satisfy other required conditions (LMCC and ALDO-Québec Education Activity) and ask for a permit to practice medicine and register on the Roll of the CMQ
The process may be long and all applications do not systematically lead to the issuance of a permit to practice. Each candidate proceeds through the various steps at his or her own pace.
A candidate who wishes to do a postgraduate training in Québec as a resident must beforehand have obtained the recognition of equivalence of his medical degree (M.D.).

The CMQ organizes regularly information sessions to help you understand the process in order to obtain a permit to practice.
