Recognition of equivalence in order to obtain a regular permit to practice

Step 1 - Recognition of equivalence of the medical degree

The order in which you go through the various steps can be different from the following.  
You may print all steps.

1.  Hold a degree awarded by a medical School listed in IMED/FAIMER Directory

You must have a medical degree (M.D. Diploma) from a medical School or a university listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) published by the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER).

2.  Be registered with the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC)

Forward the required documents - Part 1 to the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC).

Follow the procedures determined by the PCRC. If you already have an account with the PCRC, please make sure that you have authorized the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) to access your documents. The CMQ uses the PCRC services for the verification of your documents.

3.  Apply to the CMQ for recognition of equivalence of the medical degree

Forward the required documents - Part 2 to the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ), with the Request form for recognizing the equivalence of the medical diploma and/or the postdoctoral training for the issuing of a permit to practice and return it to the Collège and the required payment (non refundable). This application can be made before or after passing the MCCEE and the MCCQE – part I.

4.  Provide to the CMQ the proof that you have passed the required exams

It is the candidate's responsibility to send to the Collège des médecins du Québec a copy of the proof of success to the Medical Council of Canada examinations.

1. MCCEE
The Evaluating Examination of The Medical Council of Canada
Registration for this examination is with the Medical Council of Canada.


2. MCCQE – Part I
The Qualifying Examination – part I of The Medical Council of Canada
Registration for this examination is with the Medical Council of Canada.


3. NAC - OSCE or MCCQE – Part II


NAC – OSCE (no postgraduate training requirement)
The National Assessment Collaboration – Objective Structured Clinical Examination
The NAC – OSCE is administered by The Medical Council of Canada. 

Only one (1) examination in Québec province: Saturday August 11, 2012 (in French / in English)

Eligibility
You must have:
- submitted your application for recognition of equivalence of your medical degree to CMQ; 
- submitted the required documents - Part 1 to the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC) and Part 2 to CMQ; 
-  passed:
   * The Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE) and
   * The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination - Part I (MCCQE I) or
      the written part of the Medical Clinical Sciences Examination of the CMQ (this examination is no longer offered since 2008)
- sent to CMQ a simple copy of the examination passing letters with your application.

Admission fees: $1950.00

Registration for this examination is with the Medical Council of Canada.

5.  Confirmation of the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada Credentials verification

The Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) will receive confirmation from the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC) that the required documents have been verified and meet PCRC criteria.

  • The CMQ will recognize the equivalence of the medical degree (M.D. Diploma) once all steps have been completed.
